Alleppey Apathy

Bottom line, I think we would have been fine fast-forwarding through Alleppey (aka Alappuzha). Sometimes it’s just one of those weeks where you can’t catch a break. Priscilla came down with the inevitable-when-in-developing-countries stomach problems just as we left Munnar. That was a veerrryy long 7 hour bus ride through the mountains.

Luckily, she wasn’t missing too much in Alleppey. We’d been planning to hang out for a few days anyways, so we upgraded to a room with air conditioning. Priscilla spent time recovering, Andy toured the nearby lunch thalis and we watched a good amount of Netflix 🙂

Priscilla eventually felt good enough to take an overnight houseboat into the backwaters. This was the primary reason we came to Alleppey, so we’re both glad we were able to do it. We spent a relaxing day slowly motoring around the backwaters. It was a pretty great experience during the day, seeing a tiny bit of what life’s like in the backwaters.

There’s a boat somewhere underneath all that animal feed…

These guys were standing on boats and pulling nets full of mussels out of the river. Eventually, we tied up along a small canal to watch the sunset and eat dinner.

The food on the houseboat was impressive and delicious. Don’t know how they’re able to make so many different things in a tiny little kitchen strapped to the back of the boat.

The bedroom on the houseboat was tiny and sweltering and the a/c broke just as we were falling asleep, so it was a nearly sleepless night. The next morning, we walked into the village to our chef’s house and had chai with his family. It was fascinating to see what village life is like!

We were both a little relieved to board the overnight train from Alleppey up to Goa. The train ended up being an amazing experience! We’re both really looking forward to being in Palolem for a couple of weeks. Fun side note, the beginning of The Bourne Supremacy was set and filmed in Palolem.

Very picturesque! Is that a solar panel on the roof of your houseboat?

Yup! It was supposed to be eco friendly and to supply all their power, but I saw them plug in overnight so who knows. Doesn’t hurt though
