Amarillo and Palo Duro State Park, TX

Our longest drive yet was from Arkansas to the Texas Panhandle. We went straight through the entire length of Oklahoma to get there. We gradually watched the landscape change from forested mountains and hills to flat grasslands. During this drive, we started to get a sense of how massive the United States really is.

Amarillo handles 25% of all cattle auctions in the US and 90% of Texas cattle. So we had to eat beef. Andy had a normal burger and a jalapeno popper burger that included an entire block of cream cheese. Priscilla got a steak. We rarely eat red meat, so it was super delicious and a real treat for us.

We spent a day hiking around Palo Duro State Park. It’s the second largest canyon in the US (after the Grand Canyon, of course) and it was amazing! We were driving in the plains and then all of a sudden there’s just a canyon cliff out of nowhere. We hiked from the floor of the canyon up to the rim and loved it! We were both really glad we decided to take a day trip out to see it. We happened upon a road runner right in the middle of the path! We were pretty excited and followed it for a long time. Even saw it catch and eat a grasshopper.

Texas …good place to have steak! A roadrunner and no rattlesnakes yet? Keep your eyes open.

So far we’ve barely seen any snakes! Not sure if that’s a good thing because I’m sure they’re lurking everywhere.

Watch out for coyotes carrying anvils and Acme products!! That grasshopper was probably just bait!
