Kathmandu

We arrived in Kathmandu, and the first thing we thought (while our taxi weaved through rush hour traffic) was “It’s so quiet!”. It’s good to get away from the constant honking and noise of India.

The next thing I thought was, “oh man, I’m getting sick”. And that’s pretty much the story of our time in Nepal.

We had planned to give ourselves 4 days to get prepped for our trek. But first I was sick, then Priscilla. We ended up waiting 8 days before we finally left for our trek, and barely even made it then.

We did manage to get out in Kathmandu a bit during that time, however. We stayed in the Thamel area of Kathmandu, which is a mecca of outdoor sports stores and cute restaurants. It’s a really relaxed and friendly atmosphere and the Nepalese people are warm and friendly.

This awesome pedestrian street is four levels of shops and cafes.

Seems like everywhere has some sort of dumpling. In Nepal they’re called momos, and they’re great. On their own or in a soup.

Such an array of legumes and grains!

Nepali Thali. Delicious and about $1.75

It’s fairly rainy here (and cold for those of us used to 90F+ in India!), so we hunkered down one afternoon with some tea and coffee to wait it out.

Walking around, observing life around us on the streets of Kathmandu is always one of our favorite activities.

Highlights of Kathmandu:

  • Less honking! Seriously, you don’t realize how important this is until you’ve experienced the opposite
  • The Thamel area, even though it’s touristy, is the place for us
  • Nepali momos
