Saranac Lake, Adirondacks

We camped for 2 nights at Saranac Lake Island Campground for our 6 year wedding anniversary! We rented a canoe from Saranac Lake Marina and paddled about 2 miles to a small island in Lower Saranac Lake where our campsite was – on our own private island (Pirate Island). The island was about 200 ft in diameter and sheltered from view of other camping islands. It even had it’s own outhouse, haha! Here’s a picture of it as we approached.

Here’s our canoe, loaded up with everything we thought we’d need for two nights.

The island was lovely and we had beautiful weather. This was definitely a highlight of our trip so far. We enjoyed relaxing in our hammocks, swimming around the island and the beautiful sunset views of the lake and surrounding islands.

The night sky remained cloudless so the first night we decided to go for a night canoe ride! 😮 It was amazing! The stars and Milky Way were absolutely gorgeous.

The next morning we went on a 6 mile canoe trip to the southern end of the lake and up the river that connects to Middle Saranac Lake. It requires going through a lock about halfway up the river – which neither of us had done in a canoe before.

We loved our stay at Saranac Lake and definitely want to go back!

Highlights of Saranac Lake, NY

  • Island Camping! So much fun!! (We stayed at campsite #21)
  • Night canoe trip. We haven’t been able to see the night sky this well in a long time, as soon as we pushed off our jaws dropped.
