Trains and New Years

We were able to experience a bit of Chinese New Year in Thailand! Can you spot Andy among all the red?

This is Warorot market (the chinatown of Chiang Mai) decorated for the New Year. It was blocked off for pedestrians with tons of activities, food, and market stalls set up. We enjoyed some fried dough oysters and durian icecream.

And saw the most intense game of checkers ever. Not ‘Chinese’ checkers though.

We took the train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok the next day. It was a 12 hour train trip through the countryside, so we spent all day on the train. We were grateful for air conditioning but it was on full blast for the first half of the trip, so we were pretty chilly and bundled up in our sweaters. Quite a shock once we reached hot and humid Bangkok. View from the window

In Bangkok we stayed in Chinatown. So we walked around the evening we arrived it was PACKED!

That ice cream looks awesome, although it looks very similar to the Iowa st fair stick of butter on a stick… I’m sure it’s much better. What flavor is that?

    • Hahaha, it so does! 😂 It was durian flavored – quite an experience, haha.

Durian? That’s bold. Isn’t durian the fruit that smells like old gym socks? What does it taste like?

It tastes kinda like banana/mango but less sweet and with a strange aftertaste. It doesn’t smell good
