White Mountains of New Hampshire

We spent a quick two nights in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. On our only full day we picked up lunch sandwiches from the Backpacker Cafe in Franconia and head off to hike the Hi-Cannon and Lonesome Lake trail loop. The steepness of these hikes continues to surprise us compared to the Shenandoah mountains that we’re used to.

It was a satisfying hike that included time by a lake, climbing boulders and awesome views from the top. We finally made it up there, and the summit was full of tourists! Apparently there’s a ski tram that goes straight to the top so you can avoid all that huffing and puffing. There’s a ski-lodge cafe and observation tower up there also. The tram goes down the opposite side of the mountain from where our car was parked, so we had no choice but to hoof it back down the mountain. The descent was challenging and it could have used better blazing but the Lonesome Lake was definitely worth it.

Near the lake, we spotted a squirrel eating a pine cone right next to us. It just completely ignored us as we had an extensive photo shoot with it. These red squirrels have been a defining part of our trip so far. When we first arrived at Acadia, they were super loud and running all around like crazy. We actually thought they might be baby ‘normal’ squirrels. Turns out they’re just like that forever.

We stopped by Littleton to eat, drink and be merry at the Schilling brewery right on the river. It’s one of the best breweries we’ve been to, specializing in European style ales.

On our way out, we stopped at the Basin Bowl in Franconia Notch State Park. It was easy to get to and we had it to ourselves first thing in the morning! It surpassed our expectations, really glad we swung by.

Highlights of the White Mountains and Franconia Notch State Park

  • Schilling Brewery – awesome European style ales. Huuuuge fan of their stout.
  • Hi-Cannon to Lonesome Lake loop – particularly the descent from the summit to Lonesome Lake. The summit was OK, but a little too covered in tourists and development to appreciate.
