Acadia National Park

We had an awesome time at Acadia National Park – hiking, biking and camping. Had a couple of rainy days which gave us an excuse to drive around some of Mount Desert Island, spend time in Bar Harbor, eat lobster and ice cream and stay an extra night to take advantage of beautiful weather on our last day. We camped at the Blackwoods campsite, which had great access to a lot of the park.

Gorgeous views from Cadillac Mountain (way off in the distance are the mountains in Baxter State Park – our next stop!). It was cold and windy, so glad we brought some layers.

Loved exploring the tide pools along the coast at low tide. We saw some pretty awesome stuff like a starfish, crabs, and a bunch of colorful things that look completely alien to us. As we were leaving, we noticed a seagull chowing down on a crab that it stole from another seagull.

We spent a few hours biking the carriage roads around Jordan Pond, Eagle Lake and elsewhere. There are a bunch of hiking trails to access from the carriage roads. They seemed relatively empty of other people, but they were a highlight for us.

We spent a rainy day eating lobster in a small harbor town. There are a ton of places to get lobster on Mt Desert Island, and it doesn’t seem like you can really go wrong. We ended up at Thurston’s Lobster Pound and it was great!

Aaaaaand we got rainy day ice cream: 1 scoop cinnamon cardamom & 1 scoop ginger with chocolate chunks! YUMM!

We did several really fun hikes: Ocean View Trail, Great Head, Acadia Mountain, Flying Mountain to Valley Cove and Bar Island via the low tide sandbar. If you’re trying to see Thunder Hole at it’s best, get there 2 hours before High Tide (we missed it by about 45min).

Our favorite hike was Acadia Mt, with great views of Somes Sound – the only fjord on the east coast.

Map of the areas of Acadia we explored by hiking & biking (highlighted in yellow).

The morning we left, we walked down to the Ocean Path from the campground for sunrise.
