Danish Coasts and Castles

From Ribe, we drove to the Island of Fyn and stayed in the small community of Kerteminde. From there, we had great access to a bunch of coastal villages on the island and the city of Odense (where Hans Christian Anderson lived and wrote his famous fairy tales). We also drove south to the island of Langeland where we explored Tranekaer Castle grounds and the natural art sculptures throughout.

Our favorite part of the island was the north peninsula, which our airbnb host recommended to us. The area is known as a haven for artists; apparently, the quality of the light is really good for painting since it’s surrounded by water. It reminded us of New Zealand!

We explored two really adorable villages – Viby and Male.

On our way from Kerteminde up to the northern shore of Zealand, we stopped by a viking ship museum in Roskilde and drove along the Roskilde Fjord. We picked airbnbs in Denmark based on whether they had a wood stove or not. So we enjoyed maximum Danish hygge!

Our airbnb was right next to the water. Seems like a summer beach-house community for wealthy Copenhageners so it was mostly empty. We did a few day trips around Zealand, north of Copenhagen. First was to the Kronborg Castle, which is where Shakespeare’s Hamlet was set. It had some really creepy tunnels underneath. Apparently that’s where some giant lives who defends Denmark from other vikings’ invasions.

You can see the coast of Sweden across the water.  Another day we went to The Louisiana Museum of modern art. They had a really cool exhibit about the moon and this dark room where every surface is reflective and there are floating lights. It was amazing (kinda had to be there though)!

Amazing pictures of the villages. Life appears to be so very different than in the US.
