Copenhagen, Castles, and Christmas markets

We spent a day exploring Frederiksborg Castle and it’s grounds. The castle was filled to the brim with excessive decorations from the Middle Ages to present time.

The Frederiksborg castle grounds were extensive, as well. They stretch to include multiple orchards, a small bath-house castle, various ponds and a wetland.

On our way to Copenhagen, we took a detour to hike around a lake and find this large troll. He’s about 15 feet tall and overlooks the pond.

Copenhagen was pretty cold, but we still spent a lot of time walking around. Strøget, the longest pedestrian street in the world, is amazing. It was created when Copenhagen decided to emphasize pedestrians and bicycles, at the expense of cars. It was the first major city to adopt this approach and other cities have been trying to pedestrianize themselves after Copenhagen’s success (e.g. Melbourne, NYC). I wish every city had their priorities straight!

We went up one of the city’s towers to get some cool night views.

Danish Christmas markets have just started to open, and they’re pretty packed in the evenings. Walking around, you see dressed up vikings selling mead, smell grilling sausages, and taste Gløgg (mulled red wine with spices, raisins, and almonds). We ended up getting some Gløgg to bring back to our Airbnb for maximum hygge.
We thoroughly enjoyed Danish paintings from the Golden Age at the National Gallery of Denmark and spent a morning exploring the bohemian Freetown Christianshavn area. We also indulged in some delicious Danish pastries, including this julebread spiced with cardamom (just like the Christmas bread Priscilla’s family makes!).

Can’t miss the canals, especially when there’s a Christmas market along it. It’s ironic how bright the houses are, considering that Danish people only wear black. I swear, it’s a thing!

Like many other expensive cities with rivers, some of the boats were permanently moored and made into shops or homes. It’d be so amazing to live along one of these.

The castle is so ornate – and with a REAL moat! I have been to the Christmas Markets in Germany where they drink Gluhwein – similar drink I am sure! Makes you feel so toasty! Loving the adventures!
