Ecuador

We had a pretty whirlwind 10 days in Ecuador. Priscilla and I hadn’t originally planned on heading back to the Americas, but jumped at the chance to come back for Kate and David’s engagement party and to meet David’s family. We loved that our time there was planned out pretty extensively by Priscilla’s family, so we really laid back and enjoyed the ride!

We started in Quito, exploring old town and (attempting) to explore a nearby park. Mostly, we enjoyed hanging out with the family and taking advantage of the executive lounge at the hotel.

After a couple of days, we set off for Santo Domingo for Kate and David’s engagement party at a lovely restaurant overlooking the city with David’s family.

On our way back, we stopped at Tandapi and then to nearby Baños to see David’s home town. Many of the restaurants in Tandapi specialize in fried pork and have advertisements hanging by the road.

Afterwards, we headed to Mindo to spend a couple of days in the cloud forest. In Mindo, we explored around town, took a chocolate tour, and hiked the nearby waterfalls. Cacao pods:

Amazing breakfast at the accommodation in Mindo.

We also did a night walk one evening. Spotted a bunch of frogs. Also, at one point we all turned off our lights and a bunch of bats were flying all around us eating bananas (they were flying so close you could feel the wind from their wings!).We took a series of teleféricos and cable cars on the way to the trail starting point.

We also stopped by a butterfly farm and a hummingbird viewing area. So much nature!

Finally, we headed back to Quito before leaving Ecuador, but didn’t miss stopping at the equator (one of three disputed locations). Both North and South hemispheres!

Congratulations to Kate and David! It looks so beautiful and exotic there, with so much to see and do. I love all the photographs — especially that frog photo.
