Highlights and Costs of Australia

We were able to see a lot during our 48 days in Australia, and we managed to stay alive despite everything being deadly! We started by diving on the Great Barrier Reef before grabbing a campervan in Cairns, seeing the Daintree Rainforest and then heading south. During our 36 day roadtrip to Melbourne we hit many of the east coast highlights and WWOOFed in Queensland. We’ve found that we drive about 25-30% farther than the planned point to point distance on our road trips and this was no different (6,000 total kilometers, about 30% above our planned distance).

If we were to do this again, we will likely only drive between Brisbane and Melbourne. Driving through Queensland seemed a bit repetitive, very long and our favorite part of the country was Victoria.

9 favorite things about Australia

  • Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef! So epic
  • My absolute favorite place was Wilsons Promontory. The scenery and views were incredible, and the wildlife was everywhere. This is the place to go to see kangaroos, wallabies, emus and wombats
  • Daintree National Park and seeing a wild Cassowary!
  • Hiking in Lamington National Park. Being able to camp right at the start of all the trails was amazing.
  • The Blue Mountains felt like a green, lush version of Canyonlands National Park
  • Our favorite city was Melbourne, we will definitely go back there!
  • Magnetic Island and koalas!!!
  • The Great Ocean Road
  • Getting a first feel for surfing in Agnes Water. We’re going to spend a couple weeks getting better in Costa Rica, but this was a confidence booster.
