The Great Ocean Road and Melbourne

We drove straight from Wilsons Promontory, through Melbourne, to the Great Ocean Road. We’ve noticed that everything in Australia is named ‘Great’. It’s a pretty dramatic landscape and road, with lots of turnouts to take in the views. Someone had decorated all of this river sand just off the coast, quite the undertaking.

It was incredibly windy and surprisingly busy (particularly the 12 Apostles). The whole path was packed at several of the iconic sights along the road. After seeing a few of the limestone stacks that make up the Apostles, packed in next to a bunch of other tourists, we headed off to find a caravan spot early.

Driving back to Melbourne, we stopped to pack everything up and say goodbye to our home for the last 5 weeks.

We stayed in the St. Kilda neighborhood of Melbourne. There’s been a bunch of planning work piling up, so we took a couple of days inside to work on that. There’s a pier with a penguin colony in St. Kilda (we saw one penguin there) that was pretty neat. In the central business district, we visited the Botanic Gardens, a Boa Bun place, and the central library. We could have probably stayed in Melbourne for twice as long, it’s a really cool city!

Highlights of the Great Ocean Road and Melbourne:

  • The Great Ocean Road is worth exploring. The green rolling hills off the coast were beautiful as well, so we’re glad we cut back through inland.
  • Bao Buns! We had 9 of them between us and then slowly walked it off
  • Melbourne as a whole is our favorite city in Australia, we’d definitely come back
