San Antonio and Austin, Texas

We drove to San Antonio to spend a day with Priscilla’s cousin Erica and her husband John. They have an adorable little boy and dog. We had an awesome time catching up, trying their homemade port and staying up late playing Splendor, an addicting board game we’d never tried before. The next morning we got breakfast tacos (some of the best we’ve had!) and then headed to spend an hour walking the River Walk downtown, which is a pretty beautiful draw in the middle of the city.

In Austin we shared a beautiful AirBnB with Thomas, who traveled to visit! We spent a decent amount of time exploring the unique bars and food options along Rainey St. There’s a food truck courtyard, a bar made completely of shipping containers and everywhere has games like ping pong and shuffleboard!

We managed to squeeze in a bike ride and a kayak paddle while we were in Austin. We biked along the Ann and Roy Butler trail along the Colorado River before rewarding ourselves with some Voodoo donuts downtown and giant Jenga at a nearby pub. We also happened upon this massive sculpture of hundreds of bicycles. It’s not moving, it just looks like it is at first glance.

Unfortunately Austin seems to have a large homeless population and we were tirelessly approached by panhandlers (especially around 6th street) which lessened our enjoyment of the city. However, one artist decided to draw us while we were sitting in a pub booth and surprise us with the result. I thought that was impressive, despite Priscilla looking evil somehow.

One evening, we decided to walk about 1.5 miles to four East Side breweries to do some tastings. Blue Owl Brewery was particularly interesting since they only make sour beers.
