We started September in Costa Rica before taking a long journey back to Asia. While San Jose, Costa Rica wasn’t our favorite we absolutely loved Tokyo. We already have a bunch of stuff we want to do when we return in October. From Tokyo, we went north to Hokkaidoandthen south to Kyoto for almost 2 weeks. We started Kyoto with some long day trips. We’ve traveled some long distances in Japan, the Japan Rail Pass has been crucial for making all the transportation more affordable.
We’ve moved around quite a bit and stayed really active this month. It’s crazy to think that we started this month surfing, then went hiking, and now we’re pounding the city streets to dust. It’s been one of our highest step count months; we did long hikes in Hokkaido and have been spending all day out exploring these Japanese cities.
What did we spend in September?
Category | Spending |
---|---|
Lodging | $1,673 |
Food | $1,278 |
JR passes | $930 |
Activities | $377 |
Local transportation | $263 |
Flights | $128 |
Healthcare | $122 |
Sim cards | $73 |
Misc. items and insurance | $63 |
Total | $4,907 |
So the final tally comes out to: $ 164 / day
Japan is expensive to get around via train. If we took the bus instead of train, it’d cost significantly less. However, the bullet trains (and local trains too!) are a cool experience themselves. Lastly, the JR passes cost $930 but we used $2,000 worth of train rides with them!
