Street Art and Sepak Takraw

We’re constantly admiring the street art we see and we decided to gather some of the best in one place. Some of these were painted recently, but we have yet to actually see someone working at it. They must be very quick, because murals are everywhere!

There’s another “yap!” exclamation in the mural. Don’t know what it means, perhaps someone’s signature?

There are often sayings posted on trees and walls, particularly inside Wats.
Walking by the East Gate of the Old City one day, we noticed a badminton court set up in a courtyard. Upon closer inspection, the court markings were wrong. We puzzled over it until we found a small sign in English informing us that a Sepak Takraw tournament was to take place that evening. The name sounded fun so we came back later, expecting something similar to badminton. Nope. More like a combination of volleyball, soccer and martial arts. It was incredibly fun to watch! We stayed for 2 women’s matches and 1 men’s.

A typical Sepak Takraw serve and volley looks like this. They only touch the ball with their feet, knees, head and chest. It often ends with a martial arts kick to spike the ball over the 5ft high net!

It seems there’s always three types of players per side: a tall server who does a standing leg split to serve, a fast player digs and sets up spikes, and an acrobat is there to do flips and guard the net. The acrobat on this team had a serious case of the flippies.

Walking back from Sepak Takraw, this Wat was lit up like a beacon and we were like moths.

Another night, we ate at this cool food truck from a converted van.

The inside of the infamous red truck (or Songthaew). A flat-rate, shared taxi with two rows of covered benches in the back of a pickup truck.

Highlights of Sepak Takraw and Chiang Mai Street Murals:

  • Long murals stretching down an entire back alley
  • Sepak Takraw tournament! Probably just a matter of time until this SE Asian sport becomes more widespread
